What Is Long COVID?

Long COVID or PASC refers to a set of lingering symptoms that continue after a person has suffered a COVID-19 infection. It can affect people of any age, and people who experienced very mild or even asymptomatic COVID-19 infections are still prone to experience severe Long COVID symptoms.

Long COVID is a complex disease, and it is not yet understood why some people develop it and not others. It has been suggested that many factors may contribute, including age, genetic and general health factors; viral load, virus variations and ‘viral reservoirs’ where the virus may linger in the body; and varying immune responses.

How osteopathy can help with Long COVID

Long COVID can produce a wide range of symptoms which vary in their nature and severity from one patient to the next. Osteopathy is able to help by addressing many of the musculoskeletal symptoms which are experienced as primary or secondary effects of Long COVID.

We can also work with your GP or other medical practitioner to ensure you receive the most comprehensive treatment for Long COVID. Not all symptoms are musculoskeletal in nature. We can work with you individually, or as part of a wider multidisciplinary approach depending on your particular needs. Please speak to us, your GP or other medical consultant for advice.

Pain management

Chronic pain typically leads to muscular pain resulting from the body’s natural reaction to tense muscles in reaction to pain. Increased muscular tension and the pain it creates, leads to further tension and further pain. This results in what is known as the chronic pain cycle, potentially also leading to psychological issues and depression, and further chronic symptoms.

Osteopathy can help to relieve and reduce muscular pain and tension, and improve bodily alignment and function. As well as directly relieving muscle pain, this also breaks the chronic pain cycle and prevents pain causing further, more serious issues.

Circulatory treatment

Healthy blood flow is essential to health and healing. Increased muscle tension and bodily misalignment caused by Long COVID can attenuate the blood supply to muscles and organs, preventing healing from occurring and potentially leading to a further worsening of symptoms and new problems developing.

Increasing healthy blood flow to muscles and other bodily systems is one of the key tenets of osteopathy. This is done through various treatment modalities including therapeutic massage, spinal and joint manipulation to improve bodily alignment, and dry needling or ‘western acupuncture’, which causes an improvement in localised blood flow in the areas treated.

Respiratory treatment

Long COVID is known to lead to various respiratory issues. These may include shortness of breath or getting out of breath much quicker than before, chest pains, a persistent cough, and worsening of pre-existing respiratory conditions such as asthma. These frequently lead to a reduction of physical activity and exercise and a reduction in overall health.

Osteopathy can help with breathing and respiratory issues by reducing tension and increasing mobility in the muscles which surround the ribs and chest wall, which may aid in breathing and lung function. We can also assess and prevent secondary effects of breathing issues in the body, such as aches in the back and shoulders, and postural imbalances.

Postural improvements

Postural issues are a common factor in all chronic pain conditions. Pain causes postural changes which can lead to more pain and prevent the body from healing or increase the risk of injury.

Osteopaths are experts and improving posture and overall bodily alignment, helping to reduce pain but more importantly help you to remain healthy moving forward.

Moving beyond Long COVID

If you are recovering from or have recently recovered from Long COVID, it’s likely you will have experienced many changes in the body. These might include loss of strength and range of motion, loss of stamina, postural changes and changes in your lifestyle and habits.

We can help you in building back up to physical activity at the right pace for you. We will give you customised exercises and stretches to help recover strength and flexibility, and support your rehabilitation to full activity whilst preventing injury as you get back into living your full life.

About osteopathy

Osteopathy is a physical therapy using treatments such as spine and joint manipulation, massage and mobilisation. Osteopaths consider the body as a whole and are experts in releasing tension, improving alignment and facilitating the body’s own healing systems.

Osteopaths complete a minimum of 4 years medical training and are regulated in the UK by the General Osteopathic Council. Osteopathy is recognised as one of the 14 Allied Health Professions, and osteopaths are recognised Primary Care Practitioners.
