Many of us start the new year looking to improve ourselves and our life in some way or other. It could be improving our fitness or losing weight. It could be doing something about the pain and stiffness that has been bothering us for some time and is not going away. We might just want to feel healthier, more relaxed, or more active.
Osteopathy is ultimately about improving your body’s ability to function at its best. This may be by improving the mobility of your spine or reducing the tension in your muscles. This may result in your neck moving more easily so you can see better when driving, or your back feeling less stiff in the mornings.
It may help address joint pain or muscle spasm from bending badly, a fall or an accident, recovery from surgery, or poor posture from using a computer, ipad or phone. There may be no obvious reason why it hurts, or you just don’t feel quite right.
We can use a range of techniques depending on the nature of the problem and how we jointly agree to approach it. We normally expect to see some improvement within three to four treatments, and the statistics back this up:
Over 50% of patients reported improvement in their symptoms one week after osteopathic treatment, and 73% reported an improvement in their symptoms six weeks after treatment. NCOR PROMS Collection August 2017
We will normally provide advice on exercises you can do at home, or recommendations for local exercise classes. If there is no improvement, we can provide information for your GP to recommend further tests or onward referral to a consultant.
Longer term, we know from experience that regular treatment or exercise leads to a healthier body, better able to manage the stresses and strains of everyday living.
